Periodical ‘Karakter’. Journal of Science

Four times a year, "Karakter” publishes about eight accessible essays on science in all its forms and domains. Karakter is entirely published in Dutch. The journal focuses on fascinating phenomena and evolutions in all possible fields of science. Often the articles start from a high-profile book or article, a surprising scientific discovery, a startling fact or the mere fascination with the beauty of scientific thought. 'Karakter' also pays attention to the social relevance of science and the functioning and dysfunction of science in academic and other contexts. The articles are invariably written by scientists who value science communication with a wide audience.

Karakter's integral archive (more than 600 essays) can be found on Karakter's own website.

Karakter was founded in 2003, during the period in which ‘Vlaamse Leergangen Leuven’ was reformed and renamed into ASL which stands for ‘Academische stichting Leuven vzw’. As such, it is the successor to the journal ‘Onze Alma Mater,’ whose archives can be found here.

In 2014, ‘Karakter’ as Journal of Science received an Annual Award for Science Communication due to the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium.
